DIY Oil Change for TVS Motorcycles: A Step-by-Step Guide

  • New engine oil (check your owner’s manual for the recommended type and viscosity)
  • New oil filter
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Socket wrench and appropriate sockets
  • Drain pan (large enough to catch the old oil)
  • Funnel
  • Gloves and safety glasses

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Park your motorcycle on a level surface. Ensure the engine is cool to prevent burns. Place the drain pan underneath the oil drain plug.
  2. Loosen the Drain Plug: Use the socket wrench and the correct socket to loosen the oil drain plug. Be cautious not to strip the threads.
  3. Drain the Oil: Allow the oil to drain completely. This may take several minutes.
  4. Remove the Oil Filter: Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old oil filter. Be careful not to spill any remaining oil.
  5. Clean the Oil Filter Mounting Surface: Wipe the oil filter mounting surface clean with a rag.
  6. Install the New Oil Filter: Lubricate the gasket of the new oil filter with a thin coat of fresh oil. Screw the new filter onto the mounting surface until it makes contact with the gasket. Tighten it by hand a few turns, then use the oil filter wrench to tighten it an additional 3/4 to 1 turn. Do not overtighten.
  7. Replace the Drain Plug: Reinstall the oil drain plug and tighten it securely with the socket wrench.
  8. Add New Oil: Use the funnel to pour the recommended amount of new oil into the engine. Refer to your owner’s manual for the exact quantity.
  9. Check the Oil Level: Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the “Full” and “Add” marks. Add more oil if necessary.
  10. Start the Engine: Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. This will circulate the oil.
  11. Check for Leaks: Turn off the engine and check for any leaks around the oil drain plug and filter. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections.
  12. Dispose of Waste Properly: Recycle the old oil and filter according to local regulations.

Additional Tips:

  • Frequency: Refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended oil change interval. Generally, it’s advisable to change the oil and filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
  • Quality Oil: Use high-quality engine oil that meets the specifications recommended by TVS for your motorcycle.
  • Tools: Invest in a good quality set of tools to make the oil change process easier and safer.
  • Safety First: Always wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from oil and other fluids.
